Early Life & Education
Salim Ghauri was born in 1955 in Bahawalpur, Pakistan. He moved to Lahore at a young age and grew up in Lahore. This helped form his personality and perspective.
In his own bio, he describes himself as curious, energetic and ambitious. He loved to try new things but didn’t really stand out with his academic results. However as time went on, he became confident and determined.
He went to school in Lahore. He then went to Forman Christian College where he studied pre-engineering. He then went to study higher in Romania at the Institute of Petroleum and Gas.
This is where he began to learn about computers and information technology. This was a key point in Salim’s life. Whilst studying petroleum and gas, his interest in computers developed which meant his career goals began to move towards technology.
This is a valuable lesson to learn. Whilst education will give you a base, having curiosity, adaptability and a willingness to try new things can create amazing opportunities. Salim had a background in petroleum and gas however his love for computers led to his successful entrepreneurial career.
Starting his Business Vision
Before setting up his own technology company, Salim had a great deal of experience within the international market. He worked in Saudi Arabia and Australia. He gained lots of practical knowledge about computers, software and business.
Whilst working in Saudi Arabia he had a career in technology. One particular opportunity he had was in 1981 where he was asked to assemble and run an IBM PC for Jufali Brothers. PCs were quite new at this time and there wasn’t a lot of technical knowledge.
This gave him the opportunity to show his enthusiasm for new technology. He also saw the potential in using computers for business.
He then moved to Australia to work with technology companies. He gained experience with software and computer networking working with companies such as MC Computers, New South Wales Railways and BHP Steel.
Being in an advanced international business gave him the opportunity to understand what standards should be met.
Most importantly, it gave him the insight that there was an opportunity for Pakistan.
Whilst working in Australia, he noticed that companies were increasingly using international service providers for technology. He also noticed Indian technology professionals and companies getting involved in the global software industry.
This inspired him to ask himself why Pakistanis couldn’t offer competitive IT services. If neighboring countries could offer it, why couldn’t Pakistan?
He believed Pakistan had talented individuals who could create software, provide technical services and become competitive on the international market.
This is what inspired him to return to Pakistan and set-up his own technology business.
Starting NETSOL Technologies
The creation of NETSOL Technologies was one of the biggest milestones in Salim’s career.
During the mid-90s, the IT industry in Pakistan was still developing. There wasn’t a huge amount of software companies in Pakistan and therefore there wasn’t much international recognition or opportunities for technology professionals.
However, Salim decided to take a risk.
He returned to Pakistan with the goal of creating a technology company which could provide services to international clients whilst creating jobs for Pakistani professionals.
The company started off small between 1995-1996. Salim had to do multiple roles within the company including Chief Executive, Administrator and even making coffee!
The company began with the name Network Solutions providing networking and software development. One of their first opportunities came from a business connection with Mercedes-Benz.
They were offered the opportunity to provide technical services and then develop software for Mercedes-Benz.
In 1997 they were offered the opportunity to develop software for Mercedes-Benz in Taiwan. Successfully completing the project helped build their credibility and showed they could provide software development services to an esteemed international client.
They then went onto gain more business connections including opportunities in Thailand.
These were important milestones for the company and for the developing IT industry in Pakistan. It showed that Pakistani technology professionals could work on high-level international projects.
Global Technology Empire
One of Salim’s greatest achievements was turning his small software company into an internationally recognized technology company.
They began to offer more specialized software solutions for the finance, leasing and asset management industries.
This helped them stand out within the international technology market.
They created their flagship product NETSOL Financial Suite. This software helps organizations within the automotive finance, equipment leasing, lending and other asset based finance industries.
These industries require high-level technology to manage their complex businesses, financial agreements, customer details, contracts, payments and regulations.
By creating specialized software for these industries they entered a market where technical knowledge, reliability and long term relationships with clients were key.
They expanded their business to international markets including Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific and China. China became a key market for them. They had business connections with major car manufacturers and financial institutions meaning they could enter one of the biggest automotive finance markets in the world.
This showed the importance of specializing, creating products and building long term business relationships.
They didn’t focus on low cost software development but instead built their reputation around providing technology solutions specific to an industry.
They created a strong technology team in Pakistan creating jobs for engineers, software developers, business analysts, project managers and other technology professionals.
Focus on Quality
One of the key aspects of Salim’s leadership was focusing on quality. He understood that to gain international clients, they needed to have consistent processes, quality, project management and reliable customer support.
NETSOL invested in internationally recognized quality.
In their early days they achieved ISO 9001 certification. They then made great progress with the Capability Maturity Model Integration.
In 2006 they achieved CMMI Level 5 certification becoming the first Pakistani IT company to achieve this prestigious level.
This was an important milestone for the Pakistani software industry. CMMI Level 5 means they have very mature processes within their organization and are focused on continual improvement. They have a strong focus on measuring quality.
This helped boost their reputation internationally and showed they could meet high standards as they were based in Pakistan.
They also received awards and achieved great export results.
This helped create an understanding that Pakistan had great technology capabilities. It also helped gain confidence from international clients looking to work with Pakistani software companies.
Leadership Roles
Salim has done a lot more than just working at NETSOL. He has taken an active role in promoting Pakistan’s business and technology industries.
He has been Chairman of the ICT Task Force for the Federal Government. He has also been President of TiE Lahore an international entrepreneurial network. This has helped him promote an entrepreneurial culture and encourage business leaders to share their experiences.
He has also been President of the American Business Forum in Pakistan. This organization helps improve business connections between Pakistan and the USA.
He has also been Honorary Consul of Australia for Punjab.
This shows that Salim is not just interested in creating a successful company but has contributed to creating an environment where businesses, entrepreneurs and technology professionals can connect.
Promoting Pakistan’s IT Industry & Local Talent
One of the most valuable aspects of Salim’s entrepreneurial mindset is his confidence in Pakistan’s human resources.
Pakistan has produced many talented graduates in computer science, engineering, mathematics and other technical areas. However, they have struggled to turn this into competitive technology businesses.
Salim recognized this and helped create opportunities for Pakistani professionals to get involved in the global technology economy.
Through NETSOL he showed that high-level software products could be created in Pakistan and sold to international clients.
His international business also helped Pakistani professionals get involved with global businesses.
His entrepreneurial journey has helped change people’s perspectives on Pakistan’s IT industry. It has shown that Pakistani companies can compete by being innovative, offering high quality and having specialized technical knowledge.

Business Mindset
There are many lessons we can learn from Salim’s success story.
Believe in your vision
A key aspect of his journey was his confidence that Pakistani professionals could be successful. Despite Pakistan not having much international recognition within the IT industry, he had the vision that a Pakistani company could provide services to some of the most respected businesses in the world.
His experience shows that successful entrepreneurship often starts with having a vision.
Take calculated risks
Going back to Pakistan and starting a technology company during the 90s was risky. The market was small, it was difficult to approach international clients and there wasn’t much specialized resources.
However he realized there were always opportunities.
Learn from your failures
Salim has openly talked about the struggles he has faced throughout his career. His entrepreneurial journey wasn’t an instant success. He had failed initiatives, financial issues, tough decisions to make and a lot of hard work.
His story shows us that it’s important to learn from our mistakes.
Invest in your people
Technology businesses rely on the knowledge, creativity and dedication of their employees. Creating a strong team of talented people has been a key factor to NETSOL’s growth.
Think globally
One of the most important lessons Salim has learnt is that Pakistani entrepreneurs shouldn’t limit themselves.
There are opportunities for businesses to provide reliable products, specialized knowledge and high quality services to the international market.
Inspiring Next Gen
Salim’s journey is very inspiring for young Pakistanis looking to start their own businesses.
Pakistan has a large population of young people who are interested in technology, digital services, freelancing, software development and entrepreneurship.
However, having talent isn’t enough. Young entrepreneurs need to be disciplined, understand the market, plan their finances, have leadership skills and be patient in creating sustainable businesses.
Salim’s experience shows us that it takes years of consistent hard work to create an internationally competitive company.
Throughout his autobiography ‘Ghauri – From Nothing to Everything’ he talks about his personal experiences, struggles and lessons learnt. This shows us that success doesn’t come easily. You need to be ambitious, work hard, learn and be determined to keep going.
His story is a great reminder that entrepreneurs should focus on creating real value.
Creating businesses that employ people, export services, bring innovation and help the economy will leave a lasting impact on society.
Importance of his Success
Salim’s achievements should also be seen in the context of Pakistan’s economy.
Information technology can become one of Pakistan’s most important foreign exchange, employment and investment industries.
Unlike many traditional industries, software and digital services can be provided to international clients without transporting any products. This means Pakistani companies can earn foreign income whilst employing skilled professionals.
NETSOL’s development has shown how a Pakistani technology company can create international business connections, specialized products and a team of professionals who can provide services to global organizations.
These businesses also help develop other industries including telecommunications, education, professional services, financial technology and digital.
We need more companies like this in Pakistan who can create original products, invest in R&D, improve technical education and create international connections. Entrepreneurs like Salim provide great examples of how the private sector can help achieve this.
Vision & Determination
Salim’s entrepreneurial journey is an amazing example of how having a vision, determination and confidence in your local talent can create opportunities internationally.
From growing up in Bahawalpur and Lahore, to gaining experience abroad, working in Saudi Arabia and Australia and returning to Pakistan, Salim has always searched for opportunities.
Creating NETSOL Technologies has helped turn his business vision into an internationally recognized company and helped grow Pakistan’s reputation within the IT industry.
He has not only been successful commercially but has also been involved in national and international business organizations, contributed to technology policies and inspired young entrepreneurs. This has helped strengthen his position within Pakistan’s business community.
The most important thing to takeaway from his story is that you should never let your location limit your entrepreneurial ambitions. Pakistani professionals have the ability to create world class products, be competitive and create businesses which create employment.
